Patrick Burke (January 23, 1964 – March 18, 2020)
Patrick P. Burke was born on January 23, 1964, in Buffalo, NY. He received his B.A. in music education from the University of Tennessee in 1987. After graduation and spending one year teaching band in Raleigh, NC, Patrick accepted a position in Virginia at Hayfield Secondary School. From 1988-2019, Mr. Burke served as the director and instructor of the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Guitar I and II, Music Theory and middle school classes such as Beginning Percussion, Intermediate Band, Symphonic Band and General Music, as well as Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and Full Orchestra. Mr. Burke also served 10 years as the Fine Arts Chair for middle and high school performing and visual arts. During his 31-year tenure at Hayfield, he directed middle and high school bands, fostering a community of smart, funny, and on-time students. He taught at Hayfield for the remainder of his career before retiring in June of 2019.
Mr. Burke received commendations from the National Band Directors Association and the Virginia Band and Orchestra Association. He was the recipient of the "Hawk Award" from Hayfield Secondary School, and "Band Director of the Year 2019" from the Fairfax County Band Directors Association. Mr. Burke has also served as guest conductor of the United States Air Force Band in Washington DC and has performed with the Virginia Grand Military Band. Mr. Burke has served as the vice president of the Fairfax County Band Directors Association, and as the District Ten representative to the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. He served as a clinician and adjudicator to concert festivals across the northeast.
On March 17, 2020, Mr. Burke passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a short and hard-fought battle with metastatic melanoma.
In order to honor his legacy, the Hayfield Band Boosters created the Burke Scholarship, awarded to a Hayfield Band Senior for their contribution to the Band program.
